A few days ago, my daughter came to me with a request. She wanted to dye the ends of her hair pink.My immediate, adult, conditioned brain started to do what it always does. It started to calculate. What will people think? Is it appropriate? How long will it take? Do we have time for this in our schedule? But then I looked at her face. She wasn’t thinking about the clock, or judgment, or the rules of adulthood. She was just seeing a fun, beautiful possibility.And it hit me like a lightning bolt.
We must learn from our kids too.
We really do. We spend so much time trying to be the teachers, but the truth is, they have the secret blueprint to a happy life. That small moment with my daughter reminded me of three things we desperately need to reclaim as adults:
1. To be more relaxed
Why do we tighten up at every unexpected twist? Adulthood makes us so rigid. We worry about perfection and control. But looking at her enthusiasm made me realize I needed to breathe and be more relaxed. It’s just hair. It’s just life. It’s meant to be enjoyed, not managed like a corporate project.
2. To explore new opportunities and new possibilities
Somewhere along the way, we stop experimenting. We get stuck in our safe, neutral comfort zones because we are terrified of looking silly or making a mistake. Kids don’t have that cage. They see a blank canvas everywhere. Dying her hair pink was her way of saying, “Why not?” It reminded me that we need to step out of our routines and explore new opportunities and new possibilities, even if they scare us a little at first.
3. To ignore the clock and just enjoy life
Our lives are ruled by timers, calendars, and alarms. We rush through the days so fast that we miss the magic. Mixing that pink dye meant putting the to-do list on pause. It meant stopping the frantic rush, sitting down together, and choosing to ignore the clock and just enjoy life in that exact moment.
